It is 1928. The Nationalist government in Nanking claims to have reunified China. Many Chinese agree but many others do not. On paper, China is united. In reality, regional leaders retain powerful armies, the Communist Party survives underground, Japan seeks greater influence in the north and the Soviet Union watches events from beyond the frontier.
China's future remains undecided. Will the Nationalists build a strong modern state? Will regional leaders preserve their autonomy? Will the Communists survive and grow? Will foreign powers dominate events?
